Your Domain Name identifies you to the world. It should uniquely identify you and/or your business. It should be easy to remember, so that if someone sees it in an ad or article, they can later find it fairly easily. If your name is John Doe and you have a company that makes salads, you should try and get a domain name like johndoe.com or johndoe.ca or saladguy.com etc

.com domain name are the most common types of domain that is used. Canadians frequently use .ca domains.

You can also purchase additional domains and have them point to your site. For instance jdoe.com, doejohn.com or saladguy.com could all take you to the johndoe.com website.

Website Hosting and Storage

Once you have decided you need a web site, you will need a server to host it on the internet. Basically this is a computer service company that will store your site files and make them available to the internet. This company will also provide other services such as e-mail. Combining this with your domain name, you could have an e-mail address similar to john@johndoe.com or john@saladguy.com

Costs for web site hosting can vary from free to thousands of dollars depending upon the size and complexity of your site. For most small sites, pricing is usually quite reasonable. Free sites usually come with a number of restrictions such as placement of third party advertisements etc.

Digital Photography and Graphics

You will probably want to show pictures of yourself and/or your products on your web site. Existing photos can be scanned to get them in a digital format or you could take new digital photos. Photo software can be used to edit and modify digital photos. Graphics can be designed for logos etc, or existing graphics may, like photos, be scanned and modified. Graphics and to some extent photos can also be animated.

Web Site Maintenance

When considering the costs for your web site, you should also budget for ongoing changes to your site. If your site includes pricing for all of your products and you are constantly changing prices or adding and deleting products, your maintenance costs will be higher. If your site is getting a lot of repeat visitors, you may want to consider changing the appearance from time to time to keep it fresh.

If on the other hand, the site will remain fairly stable with few changes, maintenance costs should be fairly low.
